I was so bummed when I couldn’t get any of the #LillyforTarget stuff. Target plus size Lilly Pulitzer options were only available online and they were sold out before the store opened. I waited in line at the store hoping to get some of the home goods, but that was an epic fail.
So I was totally thrilled last night when I ran to Target and there was a rack of about a dozen Lilly items! I’d heard things were starting to be returned to the stores, but the most exciting part of my little discovery is that there were several plus size items on this rack! I quickly grabbed them and headed to the dressing room.
Where I was deeply disappointed.
The clothes looked terrible on me.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. The model Target used for the plus size Lilly Pulitzer options is not fat. She gives false hope that the clothes will be flattering because, while not a typical model size 00, she still has a body most would love to have. Here’s what I tried on. (Please excuse the messy dressing room and dirty cell phone cover. Next on my to do list this morning is to order a new one!)
Sea Urchin for You Satin Flounce Dress, size 2X, $30
Target model:
This was one of the better fitting options, but the top was huge (and I’m a DD!) leaving weird gaps under the arms and going down way too low in the back. There’s also no way to wear a bra with this. (I had the straps down on mine.)
Sea Urchin for You Satin Halter Maxi Dress, size 2X, $44
Target model:
This was also way too big under the arms, leaving big gaps. It was also extremely long. I’m 5’10” and it nearly touched the ground. And the side view made me look super pregnant. (I am not pregnant.)
Upstream Shift Dress, size 22w, $38
Target model:
My store had the shift dresses in 22w in three or four prints. I only tried on this one because I figured the fit would be the same. It was way short and way tight. The reviews on target.com say to order up. I think it would have been short and tight no matter what size. Again, I’m NOT pregnant.
Boom Boom Satin Dress, 2X, $38
Target model:
Again, too short and tight. It made me look like I had no boobs and was all belly. And it made me look like I had a wedgie. A wedgie in a dress? By the way, I also tried on the jumpsuit in this print in an XXL. XXL is definitely not comparable to 2X. I couldn’t get it over my booty.
Eyelet Tunic Cover-Up Navy, 2X, $32
Target model:
This was okay. Nothing special. Not really long enough to be a cover-up on me.
So there you have it. The Target plus size Lilly Pulitzer line – or at least a few pieces of it – on an actual plus size body. I had high hopes for this line, but Target and Lilly Pulitzer made a big mistake with #LillyforTarget. It’s not enough to just make the clothes bigger and call them plus sized. The clothes also need to be flattering for our extra tummies, booties, boobs and curves.
I’ll still try on the giraffe print if my store gets any, but I’m not hopeful it will look good.
The first dress looks about what it should. And it looks super cute on you. I love dressed and I’ve been debating on getting that one but now that I know it fits a plus size body I’ll have to go try it on
It was too big under the arms and I hate how skinny the straps are. Maybe if I had a comfy strapless bra (do they exist??). Still, the giraffe print is available in this style and I’d totally get it if I found that one.
U look beautiful in all the pictures
Lane Bryant is the best place to buy bras
I thought that one looked nice on you, and the long one, too!
Ugh, I hate how plus sized models are usually a 12-16. I need a REAL idea of how it will look on me.
Exactly! And without Spanx.
THIS IS WONDERFUL!! THANK YOU, THIS REALLY HELPS. IM SUPRISED THAT YOUR TARGET HAD QUITE A BIT FOR YOU TO CHOOSE FROM, I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND TWO. THE BOOM BOOM JUMPSUIT I LOVE BUT ITS NOT VERY FLATTERING ON ME. AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DO IT.
I am plus sized as well. Bigger than you are., actually.. I’m sorry but every woman has a different body type, as a plus sized woman or not. Some have bigger chests, some bigger around the middle, some around the bottom and thighs. With your body shape the types of dresses you were trying on, other than the first one, which actually looked cute. Wouldn’t be the correct dress or shirt/top profile you would want to go with anyway. It’s up to us, to choose the most flattering styles for our shapes. I wouldn’t try to wear crop tops or skinny jeans and then blame the clothing for not looking good on me. I totally understand the frustration and expectations.
You have provided a wonderful service for all of us who slid from an xl into a plus size. I think I’m pretty safe in saying that nobody intends to make that transition deliberately. Keep up the great work. You’re daughter is blessed to have you for a mother!!
Thanks for the posts! The first one was doable! I came across your post while searching to get one of the jumpsuits… now I think I will stickwith purchasing a beach hate cuz no way these will look even half as good on my super plus sized self!
Confidence and YOU liking it is all it takes to rock it!
