#Underawareness – Bladder Leakage: You Aren’t Alone!

So I have some boundary issues.  I share TMI.  Sometimes of the bathroom variety.  But ya know what?  More people usually thank me than complain.  Because this stuff happens to everyone.  I recently learned Depend is entering year two of Underwareness, a social movement and charitable cause to break down the bladder leakage stigma.

And you can help!  They are asking you to take part in the drop your pants for underawareness movement!

Show your support for women with bladder leakage by tagging photos #Underwareness and featuring Depend products.   In return, Depend will donate $1, up to $3 million, through 2016 to fund charities that advance the research and education of bladder leakage.

So here’s my story.  I once peed on the dog.

Our Boston terrier was blocking my path in excitement when I got got home from work, so I decided to just step over her.  And out some tinkle came.  Right on the pooch.

(That’s okay, she paid me back not long after by peeing on the floor herself.  I slipped in it and fell flat on my back.)

Like many women, I started having bladder leakage issues in my 20’s, but I didn’t know it was a pretty normal thing.  I thought there was something horribly wrong with me, but I was too embarrassed to mention it to my doctor.

Did you know more people have bladder leakage issues in their 20’s than in their 80’s?  The average age of someone suffering with bladder leak issues is 52.  More people with bladder leakage are under 50 than are over 60.

Visit www.Underwareness.com to support the cause and request free samples of Depend Silhouette Active Fit.  These aren’t your grandmother’s Depends. They are briefs with a lower rise that look, fit and feel like underwear.  They are available in black and beige.

I picked them up in Target.  Check out the cute little pouch they come in!  So discrete!

So if this is something you deal with, you AREN’T ALONE.

I definitely wished I had some bladder leakage protection when I was at a retreat with other moms a few months ago.  I laughed so hard I leaked.  And I’d bet I wasn’t the only one.

A personal story: I started having problems about 10 years ago, rushing to the bathroom multiple times a day at work, getting up once or twice at night, and some leakage. And I was in my early/mid 30s!

I went to see a specialist. But first, I saw his intern. Thank goodness: the intern suggested I stop trying to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day (something I did all the time!). The specialist prescribed meds that would dry me out (and probably make my contacts hurt a lot). I tried drinking less.

Voila! The problem stopped!!!!! Now, I just drink when I’m thirsty. Now, I’m also 10 years old and most nights have to get up. But hardly ever any leakage. ::cross my fingers::

I had no idea it was so common, my mom had issues with it, she always blamed it on having children and while it was not a major issue, she always joked about how I had to respect her cuz “I made her pee, when she sneezes”. She brought humor and took pressure off a thing many women struggle with.

I learned that a third of all women deal with bladder leakage. It’s just an issue for me when I sneeze or cough too hard but I’m young and haven’t even had kids yet, I’m glad Poise is around creating such innovative solutions to our little, ahem, issues for when the time comes that I will really need them!

I’ll never forget the first day I had bladder leakage during pregnancy! It was during a day in the summer at the park and I was so mortified that there would be a spot on the back of my dress – it reminded me of being scared of my period in middle school! So much embarrassment, but luckily women’s products have come a long way in the past 10 years!

FOR ME, BLADDER LEAKAGE STARTED AFTER MY SECOND DAUGHTER. IT CAN BE VERY EMBARRASSING. IT CAN ALSO BE A PAIN THE BUTT TO WEAR PANTY LINERS EVERY DAY. THEY CAN BE VERY DRYING. BUT THE IDEA OF UNDERWEAR THAT FITS GREAT AND PROTECTS AGAINST BLADDER LEAKS – THAT COULD BE AMAZING. I WILL HAVE TO CHECK THEM OUT.
