I’ve visited Tybee Island, Georgia a half dozen or so times over the last decade. I’m spending the first quarter of 2020 on the island. I have driven by Gerald’s Pig & Shrimp many times and thought, “I should stop in one day.” Well, I finally did!
Gerald’s Pig & Shrimp is an open-air establishment on Highway 80, the main drag of Tybee Island. It was cold and rainy, so while the tables are covered it’s still basically outdoors. I was dry, but cold.
It was worth it!
There are signs featuring wise quotes all over Gerald’s Pig & Shrimp. I was greeted by Gerald himself as I was twirling around, reading all the signs. He invited me to sit wherever I wanted and a waitress came right over to take my drink order and show me the menu.
I asked the waitress for recommendations. Obviously pork and shrimp are the stars at Gerald’s Pig & Shrimp. The waitress suggested the fresh limeade and a basket that had pulled pork, a rib and fried shrimp. It came with my choice of baked beans. The food was delivered quickly and piping hot. The rib, which the waitress told me had just come off the smoker, was probably the best I’ve had. Everythign else was also delicious. And the limeade? I’d pop by just for a cup of that sweet tart perfection!
Since it was cold and rainy, I almost had the place to myself. A large family arrived just as I was finishing up. I’ve driven by to see the place packed many times, so there are definite perks to cold, rainy island days.
I was sitting in my car with a happy, full tummy deciding if I wanted to go to the grocery store or home for a nap when there was a knock on my passenger window. It was Gerald, standing in the rain with my debit card. Now that’s customer service!
